PNEUMONIA: Simple Explanation Contrary to Popular African Belief


What Is Pneumonia?

As opposed to the common belief in Africa that pneumonia is caused by cold and been exposed to too much ventilation at a tender age,

Pneumonia is actually a lung disease characterized by inflammation of the airspaces in the lungs, most commonly due to an infection caused by viruses and bacterias and sometimes by fungi amongst other microorganisms.

Pneumonia can be a viral infection, bacterial infection, or fungus and is not caused by cold although a common cold can be one of the symptoms experienced by a pneumonia patient.


Some common symptoms of the disease include:

CoughChest pain while breathing, Fever, Chills, Cough, Shortness of breath and;Fatigue

These symptoms vary in degree of severeness and also depends on the patient’s overall health status.


The most common placed treatment for pneumonia include Vaccinations, administration of antibiotics and antiviral drugs.

Vaccinations are available against common causing organisms. And antibiotics can be used to cure pneumonia caused by bacterias and fungi while antiviral drugs are used to cure pneumonia caused by viruses.

But it is highly recommended to see the doctor (Physician) in order to determine the causing organisms and degree of severity and to provide adequate prescription and treatments.
